Georgios Maris is academic researcher in European Studies and European Political Economy. He is currently a Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for International Studies at University of Oxford, Lecturer at the Neapolis University Pafos, Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and Special Teaching Staff at the Department of Social and Political Science at the University of Cyprus. His academic research focuses on Political Science, European Studies, European Political Economy, and International Political Economy.
In his current work, develops an alternative model for the systematic examination of European integration, by stressing the importance of asymmetric power of the Member States. As it demonstrated by the Eurozone crisis, through the existence of asymmetric relationships the powerful Member States may dominate the less powerful. Asymmetry seems to alter the very concept of European integration transforming every aspect of the integration process. In fact, European integration becomes the means, and the EU becomes the arena, within which the powerful Member States dominate the less powerful through the dynamics of asymmetry.
Georgios has also served as a consultant for the provision of technical assistance to the Greek authorities to support the establishment and implementation of an action plan for an effective SME policy in Greece at the Task Force for Greece (European Commission).
Georgios held numerous fellowships and grands, including from the Centre for Hellenic Studies Anniversary Scholarship (Kings College London), and the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). He obtained his doctorate (DPhil) in Political Science and International Relations from the University of the Peloponnese, a MA from the King’s College London and a BSc from the Panteion University (Athens).
His upcoming publications include three research papers i. Asymmetric Integration. Dynamics and Change in the European Union, ii. Europeanization and Modernization in Greece: The Political Discourse Between Promises and Reality, and, iii. The Greek Economic Crisis through the Prism of the Variety of Capitalism.
